南アフリカの写真集（フォトブック）に関する初の本格的研究書として刊行された作品集。人種隔離政策が確立していたいわゆるアパルトヘイト期（1945年–1990年）の数十年にわたる困難な国際的展開と、民主化以降の時代における写真や芸術の実践のなかで獲得した顕著な存在感をたどる。

本書は、写真集が都市部の読者層を対象とする、編集・デザインされた自覚的なメディアとして市場に参入していった過程を考察する。長く重要な意義を持ち続けてきた2冊の写真集、アーネスト・コール（Ernest Cole）の『House of Bondage』（1967年）とデヴィッド・ゴールドブラット（David Goldblatt）の『In Boksburg』（1982年）に関する包括的な論考を序章に据え、さらに1956年から2024年までに刊行された43冊の重要な写真集群を紹介している。

各書籍に関する考察では、それらの制作を特徴づけた検閲、プロパガンダ、アクティヴィズム、そして創造的実験が交差する歴史をたどる。20年以上にわたる研究に基づく本書は、南アフリカの歴史と視覚文化において写真集が果たしてきたダイナミックな役割を、多層的かつ豊かな視点から明らかにしている。
